Marcia Cross wanted a different ending for Desperate Housewives !

Airing from 2004 to 2012, Desperate Housewives remains one of the most iconic television series of its era. Created by Marc Cherry, the show followed the eventful lives of the residents of Wisteria Lane for eight seasons, blending drama, comedy, and mystery.
Among its most memorable characters was Bree Van de Kamp, portrayed by Marcia Cross. Perfectionist, demanding, and often at the center of some of the show’s most unforgettable storylines, Bree became one of the defining figures of the series. More than a decade after the final episode aired, the ending of Desperate Housewives continues to spark discussion among fans. While attending The Desperate Con by Union Conventionsin Paris, Marcia Cross shared her own vision of what the ideal conclusion to the series could have been.
Marcia Cross imagines a different ending for Desperate Housewives
During her panel, the actress explained that she would have preferred an ending that left the door open for the characters to return in the future:
“As for the ending of the series, I would have preferred it to end with: To be continued… And then we could come back several years later, all much older like we are now, surrounded by our grandchildren or whatever, and all the women of Wisteria Lane have become real badasses.”
For Marcia Cross, such an approach would have allowed the series to explore a new chapter in the lives of its heroines years after the events of the 2012 finale, which provided a clear conclusion for the central characters.
The women of Wisteria Lane as “badasses”
Marcia went even further by imagining what Susan, Lynette, Gabrielle, and Bree might have become in this alternative version:
“They would kind of be teaming up to save the world, while all the young people would be there to do the sexy stuff and everything else!”
The idea preserves the spirit of the series while offering a generational evolution for the characters. The original housewives would take on a new leading role, while a younger generation would occupy a different place in the story.
A way to never truly say goodbye to the series
For Marcia Cross, this concept had another major advantage:
“And it would be a way to never really end the series. So that’s my idea!”
Her comments reflect the actress’s lasting affection for Desperate Housewives and for her character, Bree Van de Kamp. Like many fans, she seems to appreciate the idea that the world of Wisteria Lane could continue to exist beyond the final episode.
Desperate Housewives, a series that remains popular more than a decade after its ending
Even after its conclusion, Desperate Housewives continues to hold an important place in television culture. The adventures of Susan Mayer, Lynette Scavo, Gabrielle Solis, and Bree Van de Kamp are still being discovered by viewers. Mainly through streaming platforms and reruns.
Marcia Cross’s remarks show that the idea of a return or continuation remains a topic that fascinates fans. But, no official revival project has been announced. The actress has now shared her own vision of what the future of Wisteria Lane could have looked like. So, what is your opinion about it?
