Mark Moses reflects on the unexpected relationship between Paul Young and Susan Mayer

Mark Moses looks back on the complexity of Paul Young in Desperate Housewives and discusses his unexpected relationship with Susan Mayer.
From the very first episode of Desperate Housewives, Paul Young established himself as one of the most mysterious residents of Wisteria Lane. Portrayed by Mark Moses throughout all eight seasons of Marc Cherry’s series, Paul was at the center of many storylines. And it begun with the suicide of his wife, Mary Alice Young, which sets the entire story in motion.
Over the course of the series, Paul shifted between being an antagonist, a victim, and a man seeking redemption. This evolution helped make him one of the most layered and complex characters in the show. During an interview with our media at The Desperate Con by Union Conventions in Paris, Mark Moses reflected on what made Paul such a unique character.
Mark Moses praises Paul Young’s complexity
Asked about Paul Young, the actor explained that this ambiguity was one of the character’s greatest strengths:
“Paul was a complex character. I think people didn’t always know how to feel about him. Sometimes they felt compassion for him, other times they hated him! I think Marc Cherry and the writers did an incredible job of constantly finding that balance.”
According to Mark Moses, this constant shift between empathy and rejection meant that viewers could never fully decide how they felt about Paul. Throughout the series, the character made morally questionable decisions. While also revealing moments of vulnerability that encouraged audiences to see him from different perspectives. This nuanced writing made Paul Young far more than a traditional television villain.
An unexpected relationship between Paul Young and Susan Mayer
Beyond the show’s biggest mysteries, Mark Moses also fondly remembers the relationship that gradually developed between Paul Young and Susan Mayer. Which happened during the later seasons.
“Later on, there was also the dynamic between Paul and Susan, which I really enjoyed. They were sort of friends, but with a touch of intimacy, and I think the most interesting part was that Paul eventually realized Susan had more compassion for him than anyone else.”
Although more understated than many of the series’ other storylines, this relationship revealed a different side of Paul Young. Opposite Susan—often portrayed as one of Wisteria Lane’s most compassionate residents—Paul displayed a vulnerability that viewers had rarely seen before.
A memorable collaboration with Teri Hatcher
Mark Moses concluded by sharing how much he enjoyed working alongside Teri Hatcher:
“I had a wonderful time working with Teri Hatcher.”
Together, the two actors created a relationship unlike any of their characters’ other interactions. Blending suspicion, compassion, and mutual understanding, Paul and Susan brought a unique dynamic to Desperate Housewives.
A character fans still love to debate
More than a decade after the series finale, Paul Young remains one of the most debated characters in Desperate Housewives. Was he truly a villain, or simply a man repeatedly shaped by tragic circumstances? Mark Moses’ comments reflect the writers’ determination never to offer an easy answer. That enduring ambiguity continues to make Paul Young one of the most fascinating characters in Wisteria Lane and explains why his journey remains such a memorable part of the series.
